What Does "Pastured" Mean for Our Pork at Sawyer Creek Cattle?
At Sawyer Creek Cattle, we take pride in offering pastured pork that reflects our commitment to sustainable farming and ethical animal care. But what exactly does "pastured" mean when it comes to our hogs? Let’s break it down for you.
Pasture-Raised in Spring and Summer
During the warmer months, when temperatures are suitable for outdoor living, our hogs enjoy the freedom of pasture life. Once they’re old enough, they are introduced to the outdoors, where they can roam in the sunlight, breathe fresh air, and root around in the soil. This means they’re free to engage in natural behaviors, such as foraging for bugs and worms, in a stress-free environment that supports their health and well-being.
Hay and Grain in Cooler Months
As fall sets in and temperatures drop, our hogs transition to a diet that includes free-choice hay and grain. This continues into the winter months, ensuring they receive the nutrition they need to grow and thrive. Large in part, all hogs require some grain all the way from a little piglet to a full-grown butcher hog. We take the extra step and ensure the grain we give them is certified all-natural and GMO-Free. Nothing weird in these hogs' feeds, unless it’s worms.
What "Pastured" Does Not Mean
When we say "pastured," we’re also saying what our pork is not. This means our hogs aren’t confined to buildings or crowded spaces, nor do they endure the harsh conditions often found in industrial farming, like living in their own waste. Unlike concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), where animals are confined for a minimum of 45 days a year in tight quarters, our hogs thrive outdoors with fresh air, sunlight, and plenty of space to move freely and grow naturally.
The Benefits of Pastured Pork
Raising our hogs on pasture means they are healthier, happier, and raised in an environment that mimics their natural habitat. Access to sunlight and fresh air not only reduces stress but also contributes to the quality of the pork we produce. You’ll taste the difference in every bite, knowing that our farming practices prioritize the welfare of our animals and the environment.
