DIY Nourishing Raw Honey and Grass-Fed Beef Tallow Face Mask

This guide will walk you through the entire process, from rendering grass-fed beef tallow to creating a nutrient-rich face mask. Perfect for hydrating, soothing, and rejuvenating your skin!

Ingredients

Step 1: Render the Grass-Fed Beef Tallow

What You’ll Need:

  • Grass-fed beef fat (suet or trimmings)
  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Large pot (for stove-top method) or slow cooker
  • Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
  • Heat-safe glass jars for storage

Stove-Top Method

  1. Prepare the Fat:
    1. Chop the beef fat into small pieces (1-inch cubes or smaller). Smaller pieces melt faster and more evenly.
    2. Optional: Use a food processor for a finer consistency.
  2. Melt the Fat:
    1. Place the chopped fat into a large, heavy-bottomed pot and set the heat to low. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and scorching.
  3. Render the Fat:
    1. Over the next 1–3 hours, the fat will melt into a golden liquid. The crispy bits left behind (cracklings) can be saved as a tasty snack.
  4. Strain and Store:
    1. Pour the liquid fat through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a heat-safe jar.
    2. Allow it to cool and solidify into creamy, white tallow. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 months or in the fridge for up to 1 year.

Slow Cooker Method

  1. Prepare the Fat:
    1. Chop the beef fat into small pieces as above.
  2. Set Up the Slow Cooker:
    1. Add the fat to the slow cooker and set it to low heat. Cover loosely to allow moisture to escape.
  3. Render the Fat:
    1. Cook for 4–6 hours, stirring occasionally. The fat will separate into a liquid, leaving crispy bits behind.
  4. Strain and Store:
    1. Strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a jar. Let cool and store as noted above.

Step 2: Melt the Rendered Tallow

  1. Use a double boiler or a heat-safe bowl over simmering water to gently melt 2 tbsp of the rendered tallow. Avoid overheating to preserve its nutrients.
  2. Remove from heat once fully melted.

Step 3: Cool the Tallow

  1. Allow the tallow to cool slightly until it reaches around 116°F (47°C). This ensures it’s warm enough to mix easily but not hot enough to damage the raw honey’s beneficial enzymes.

Step 4: Mix the Ingredients

  1. Stir in 1 tbsp raw honey.
  2. If desired, add 1 tsp jojoba oil and 2 drops lavender essential oil for additional skin benefits. Mix thoroughly.

Step 5: Refrigerate and Whip the Mixture

  1. Place the mixture in the refrigerator for 30 minutes, or until the edges start to solidify while the center remains soft.
  2. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, whip the mixture for 5–10 minutes until light, fluffy, and creamy.

Step 6: Store the Face Mask

  1. Transfer the whipped mask into a sterilized, airtight jar.
  2. Store in a cool, dry place for up to 3 weeks or refrigerate for up to 2 months.

How to Use the Face Mask

  1. Cleanse your face to remove dirt and oil.
  2. Using clean fingers or a brush, apply a thin layer of the mask evenly, avoiding the eye area.
  3. Leave the mask on for 15–20 minutes.
  4. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.
